Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a procedure which uses a laser to remove unwanted or excess hair from areas of the face and body. Commonly treated areas include the upper lip, chin and other areas of the face, as well as the neck, back, underarms, chest, bikini area, and legs. Most other areas of the body can be treated as well.

Laser hair removal is performed in the office setting using a topical anesthetic. The treatment is quick, taking as little as ten minutes for small areas and up to an hour or more for large or multiple areas. During treatment, a laser device is applied to the area, allowing the laser energy to pass through the skin to the individual hair follicles. The energy from the laser is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle, disabling those hairs in the active growth stage and inhibiting future hair growth. Because the laser only targets hairs in the active growth stage, multiple sessions are needed to entirely remove hair from any given area.

There is little discomfort associated with laser hair removal. Some temporary redness or swelling may occur at the treatment site, but these side effects typically fade within twenty-four hours or less. Recovery is immediate and patients are able to return to work the same day. Exercise should be postponed until the following day.
